Folsom Era Weevils

These weevil abdomens were found in a Folsom era archaeological excavation near Gunnison, CO in the fall of 2006. Several hundred of them were found in a rock wall that was buried about 18" below the soil surface. They are in excellent condition considering the archaeological evidence suggests they may be 10,000 years old! They have been identified as Dyslobus (near) wasatchensis, a root weevil that is possibly an undescribed species. For more information on the Folsom site, click here.

Corn Ear Worm

Corn earworm is a native insect that has become a serious pest of corn, sweet corn, tomatoes and other crop plants. Corn earworm does not always overwinter in western Colorado, but reinfests each year by migrating from southern areas. This Florida publication gives an overview of corn earworm biology.

Jerusalem Cricket

Jerusalem crickets are common insects in western Colorado desert areas although they are not often seen. They live in the soil, emerging at night. They are commonly brought into the Extension office for ID. They make good pets! Keep them in a terrarium and feed them dog food.
